Ease of Use Certification Program
The Arthritis Foundation's Ease of Use Certified® program designates products and packages that have been independently tested and proven easy to use for people living with arthritis and chronic pain, and in general for everyone.
1
Test
A product or package can go through ease of use evaluation in prototype stage or once the design is complete. The Arthritis Foundation will help determine the most efficient path into the process.2
Results
Testing through both lab and human factor analysis with report and a pass or fail result.3
Certification
If the result is a PASS, you are eligible to license the Ease of Use seal. If the result is FAIL, the report will include design suggestions.A Competitive Edge in Adaptability
For the 60 million Americans living with arthritis, and the millions more experiencing chronic pain, standard packaging and products often fall short. Tasks like opening a jar, pressing a button, or twisting a cap can range from frustrating to impossible.
The 2024 Arthritis Foundation Ease of Study found 90% of consumers often need help opening packaging, and 70% with arthritis struggle with products that require twisting or gripping.
This is more than a usability issue, it’s a market opportunity.
Globally, 1 in 5 people lives with chronic pain. As the arthritis population alone is projected to grow 41% by 2030, designing with accessibility in mind is no longer a niche consideration—it’s a critical differentiator.
When ease of use is built into packaging and product design:
• Customer satisfaction and loyalty increase
• Purchase intent rises
• Brands earn trust and stand apart
The Ease of Use certification helps you validate your design choices through consumer-based testing and real-world functionality.
