Arthritis Foundation Statement on Navigating Nationwide Generic Medication Shortages

We are working closely with health care partners to keep you apprised of the situation.

June 7, 2023 - There is a nationwide shortage of many generic medications, including methotrexate, which many people with arthritis rely on for their treatment. The Arthritis Foundation is working closely with health care stakeholders to stay up to date on when the shortage may be resolved and any further details and guidance.

In the meantime, if your pharmacy is out of stock and you are experiencing difficulties getting your prescription filled, we encourage you to call other pharmacies in your community, as shortages are impacting pharmacies differently. Also work with your health care provider on any alternate strategies.

In addition, we encourage you to call our Helpline (800-283-7800) to ensure that we know the impact on patients and so our team can give you the latest updates. You are also welcome to report the shortage to the FDA’s website at https://www.fda.gov/drugs/drug-safety-and-availability/drug-shortages. (Please be aware that the Arthritis Foundation cannot provide you with direct access to methotrexate.)
