Drug Name(s): Estrace, Estratab, Menest, Menostar
Class: Hormones
Used to prevent osteoporosis in women
Dosage
Form(s): tablet
Estratab, Estrace, Menest: 0.3 mg to 0.6 mg daily in a single pill
Menostar: 1 patch delivers 14 micrograms (mcg) estradiol daily for a week.
Special Instructions
Take tablets at the same time each day with a glass of water.
Potential Side Effects
Stomach bloating; breast pain; increased breast size; nausea; feet and lower leg swelling; weight gain
Be Aware
Estrogen may be appropriate for osteoporosis when other therapies have failed. Women who have not had a hysterectomy should take estrogen with progesterone. Before taking this drug, talk to your doctor about the possible risk of heart disease, breast or uterine cancer, blood clots and other side effects.
