Abaloparatide (parathyroid hormone)

Drug Name(s): Tymlos

Class: Bone-forming agents

Used to treat osteoporosis in postmenopausal women or men who are at high risk for bone fracture, who cannot use another osteoporosis treatment or for whom other osteoporosis treatments did not work well.

Dosage

Form(s): auto-injector pen

80 mcg injection once a day

 

Special Instructions

Ask your doctor about a calcium or vitamin D supplement when using this drug.

Before first use, store pens in the refrigerator. During 30 days of use, the pen should be stored at room temperature. 

Inject into thigh, abdomen or upper arm. Rotate injection sites. Do not inject where skin is tender, bruised, red or hard

Potential Side Effects

Calcium kidney stones, hypercalcemia (elevated calcium in the blood), temporary low blood pressure and dizziness after the first few doses

Be Aware

Do not use if you have ever had bone cancer or radiation or if you have high blood levels of calcium. Urine tests should be done to monitor calcium excretion if you have urinary tract stones or a high calcium level. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, or if you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed. Should not be used in children. Do not take for more than 2 years.
