Azathioprine

Drug Name(s): Azasan, Imuran, generic

Class: DMARDs

Used off-label for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA).

Dosage

Form(s): tablet

50 mg to 150 mg daily in one or two doses to start. Dose may be increased, beginning at 6 to 8 weeks and thereafter by steps at 4-week intervals.

Special Instructions

Take with food.

Potential Side Effects

Chills; fatigue; fever; loss of appetite; liver problems; low blood counts; nausea; vomiting; weakness

Be Aware

Azathioprine is linked to certain cancers, including lymphoma. This drug can cause a dangerous interaction with allopurinol, a drug used for gout.

People with a deficiency of the enzyme TPMT may develop bone marrow damage with this drug. Your doctor may test your levels before prescribing.

Your doctor should order periodic blood and urine tests to check for unwanted effects. Before this or any DMARD, tell your doctor if you are planning to become pregnant.
