POSITION SUMMARY (Basic purpose or primary function of job)

The Manager of Volunteer Development supports markets in sourcing new volunteers to expand and grow the Live Yes! Arthritis Network (LYAN). The position manages communication with key volunteer audiences – namely Leadership Boards and LYAN Leaders and Facilitators – while also developing tools, resources and strategies to increase their effectiveness and grow retention.


JOB RESPONSIBILITIES (Principal responsibilities or job duties)

  1. Leverages capabilities of Arthritis Foundation website as a volunteer recruitment tool. Manages processes including listings of open volunteer positions by market and a centralized follow-up process to match volunteers to relevant roles.
  1. Establishes partnerships with volunteer agencies and corporate volunteerism programs to open new doors for attracting volunteers.
  1. Develops and maintains all volunteer management tools and resources. Collaborates with Field Management and Market Leadership to assess ongoing needs and effectiveness of offerings.
  1. Manages communication processes with volunteer groups to ensure activation and engagement of volunteers, particularly in expanding the Live Yes! Arthritis Network.
  1. Tracks and evaluates the onboarding of volunteers by local markets (e.g., mentoring, coaching that happens locally in addition to online orientation courses)
  1. Develops and maintains tools and processes for local leadership board orientation.
  1. Manages staff learning programs on volunteer management and volunteer orientation courses on internal learning management system.
  1. Works in partnership with the Senior Director & Field Management Team to provide relevant training offerings on volunteer management for field staff.
  1. Creates a service awards program and volunteer recognition tools that can be implemented within a market.


  1. Related Bachelor’s Degree, ideally in business management, non-profit administration or Training/Development/Education.
  1. 7-10 years working within a national voluntary health setting.
  1. Experience in volunteer management is a must.
  1. Experience with delivery of volunteer training, development and deployment of volunteer recognition programs, and interaction with local leadership boards.
  1. Communicates effectively through effective presentation skills, writing ability, and delivery of clear, concise messaging.
