Mycophenolic acid

Drug Name(s): Myfortic

Class: DMARDs

Type: Immunosuppressant

This immunosuppressant medication is FDA-approved to prevent organ transplant rejection. It is used off-label to treat a number of rheumatic diseases, including lupus nephritis, vasculitis, uveitis and scleroderma-related interstitial lung disease, especially in those who can’t take corticosteroids.

Dosage

Form(s): tablet

720 to 1,080 mg twice daily; varies by disease

Special Instructions


  • Do not take if pregnant, breastfeeding or if you may become pregnant. Men must use a condom.

  • This drug is an immunosuppressant and can increase your risk of serious infection. Notify your doctor immediately if you have signs of infection.

  • Consult with your doctor before receiving any vaccinations while on this drug.


Potential Side Effects

Rash or hives; bloody stools; vision changes; drowsiness; fatigue; trouble sleeping; constipation; diarrhea; nausea; vomiting.
