Zoledronic acid

Drug Name(s): Reclast, Zometa

Class: Bisphosphonates

Used to treat and prevent postmenopausal osteoporosis in women, to increase bone mass in men with osteoporosis, and to treat and prevent glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis.

Dosage

Form(s): Infusion

Treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis in women, to increase bone mass in men with osteoporosis, and in treatment and prevention of glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis: 5 mg infusion once a year

Special Instructions

Speak with your doctor about taking a vitamin D supplement while receiving treatment.

Potential Side Effects

Fever; headache; joint and muscle pain

Be Aware

Hypocalcemia may worsen during treatment. Renal toxicity may be greater in patients with underlying renal impairment or other risk factors, including advanced age or dehydration. Your doctor will monitor your kidney function while you are on this medication. Osteonecrosis of the jaw has been reported in patients receiving zoledronic acid. You should have a routine oral exam before beginning treatment. Atypical femur fractures have been reported in patients receiving this drug. Let your doctor know if you have thigh or groin pain or if you experience severe joint, bone or muscle pain.
