Zolpidem

Drug Name(s): Ambien, Ambien CR, generic

Class: Hypnotics

Used for the short-term treatment of insomnia.

Dosage

Form(s): tablet, extended-release tablet

Regular tablets:

For women: Recommended initial dose is a single dose of 5 mg immediately before bedtime, not to exceed 10 mg daily

For men: Recommended initial dose is a single dose of 5 to 10mg immediately before bedtime, not to exceed 10 mg daily

Extended–release tablets:

For women: a single dose of 6.25 mg immediately before bedtime 

For men: a single dose of 12.5 mg immediately before bedtime

Special Instructions


  • Use only when you are able to sleep for at least 7-8 hours.

  • Do not drive or perform other potentially dangerous activities until you know whether the medication will impair your ability to do them safely.

  • Take with a full glass of water at bedtime.

  • Swallow extended-release capsules whole do not crush or chew.


Potential Side Effects

Abnormal dreams; blurred vision; constipation; diarrhea; dizziness; drowsiness; forgetfulness; headache; lack of coordination; lightheadedness; nausea; weakness

Be Aware

Combining any of these drugs with alcohol or other depressants (including antihistamines, narcotics and some dental anesthetics) can make side effects more severe. 

Drinking alcohol while taking zolpidem increases the risk of sleepwalking.
