Gabapentin

Drug Name(s): Horizant, Neurontin, generic

Class: Anticonvulsants

Used off-label to relieve fibromyalgia pain.

Dosage

Form(s): tablet, capsule, solution extended-release tablet

1,200 to 3,000 mg daily in two or three doses

Special Instructions

Do not take an antacid for at least 2 hours after taking this drug.

Do not drive or perform other potentially dangerous activities until you know whether the medication will impair your ability to do them safely.

Talk to your doctor before stopping the drug. Your dose may need to be slowly reduced.

Potential Side Effects

Fever; frequent infections; muscle pain; severe fatigue or weakness; suicidal thoughts, swollen glands; unusual bruising or bleeding; yellow skin or eyes

Be Aware

Do not use gabapentin products interchangeably as different products may be metabolized, absorbed and excreted differently. Patients treated with this or any anticonvulsant drug should be monitored for changes in mood, depression and suicidal thoughts and behavior. Do not take this drug when using any central nervous system depressants, including opioids, as the combination may lead to serious or life-threatening respiratory depression.
