This immunosuppressant medication is FDA-approved to prevent organ transplant rejection. It is used off-label to treat several rheumatic diseases, including lupus, rheumatoid arthritis (RA), inflammatory bowel disease, systemic sclerosis (scleroderma), vasculitis and uveitis.
Dosage
Form(s): tablet or capsule
2 to 3 grams twice daily; varies by disease
Special Instructions
This drug is an immunosuppressant and can increase your risk of serious infection. Notify your doctor immediately if you have signs of infection.
Consult with your doctor before receiving any vaccinations while on this drug and do not get any live vaccines.
Potential Side Effects
Constipation; diarrhea; dizziness; fast heartbeat; headache; low white and red blood cell counts; nausea and vomiting; swelling of the lower legs, ankles, feet, hands and arms.
Be Aware
This drug is harmful to fetuses and infants. Do not take if pregnant, breastfeeding or if you may become pregnant. Men must use a condom.
