Methotrexate

Drug Name(s): Trexall, Xatmep, Otrexup, Rasuvo, generic

Class: DMARDs

Used to treat rheumatoid arthritis (RA), dermatomyolsitis, and polyarticular JIA.

Dosage

Form(s): tablet, oral solution, injection 

7.5 to 30 mg in a single weekly dose.

Dosages for children: The dosages listed above are those typically prescribed for adults aged 18-65. Dosages for children can vary. Ask your doctor about the appropriate dosage for your child.

Special Instructions

Avoid aspirin and other salicylates.

Drink plenty of fluids while taking this medication.

Your doctor may prescribe folic acid to reduce side effects, including mouth sores.

Minimize exposure to sunlight and wear sunscreen.

Potential Side Effects

Abdominal discomfort; chills; dizziness; fever; general feeling of illness; hair loss; headache; increased sun sensitivity; itching; liver problems; low blood counts; mouth sores; nausea; rash; shortness of breath; yeast infections

Be Aware

Your doctor should order periodic blood and urine tests to check for unwanted effects. Before taking any DMARD, tell your doctor if you are planning to become pregnant.

Discuss any alcohol use with your doctor.

Tell your doctor immediately if you have a dry cough, fever or difficulty breathing, as these symptoms may be associated with serious medication side effects.
