Technical description of the Arthritis Foundation-funded randomized clinical trial TOPS (The Osteoarthritis Prevention Study)

This manuscript details the design and rationale of a clinical trial of diet and exercise to prevent knee osteoarthritis in female patients over 50 years of age that struggle with obesity. This project is led by Stephen Messier, PhD, and includes multiple Arthritis Foundation-funded scientists. This project was co-funded by the Arthritis Foundation, NIH and other government agencies.

Arthritis Foundation and Hospital for Special Surgery - Special Issue: The 2023 Hip Osteoarthritis Clinical Studies Conference

This edition of the HSS Journal®: The Musculoskeletal Journal of Hospital for Special Surgery covers important topics covered in the 2023 Hip Osteoarthritis Clinical Studies Conference, including the epidemiology, detection and rehabilitation of people with hip osteoarthritis.

The series of research articles in this publication was guest edited by the Arthritis Foundation’s Jason Kim, PhD, vice president of osteoarthritis programs, and Mathias Bostrom, MD, associate surgeon-in-chief at HSS. In addition, Dr. Kim has authored several articles for this special edition. This project contains contributions by Arthritis Foundation Staff.

The OARSI Joint Effort Initiative: Priorities for osteoarthritis management program implementation and research 2024-2028

This manuscript describes the work of the Joint Effort Initiative (JEI), an international collaboration of clinicians, researchers, and consumer organizations with a shared vision of improving the implementation of osteoarthritis management programs (OAMPs). This study aimed to identify JEI's future priorities and guide direction.

Summary Report of the Arthritis Foundation and the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society's Symposium on Targets for Osteoarthritis Research: Part 2: Treatment Options

This second of a 2-part series of articles recounts the key points presented in a collaborative symposium sponsored jointly by the Arthritis Foundation and the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society with the intent to survey current treatment options for osteoarthritis (OA) of the foot and ankle. Opportunities for future research are discussed, such as developments in surgical options for ankle and the first metatarsophalangeal joint. The OA scientific community, including funding agencies, academia, industry, and regulatory agencies, must recognize the importance to patients of addressing the foot and ankle with improved basic, translational, and clinical research.

Summary Report of the Arthritis Foundation and the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society's Symposium on Targets for Osteoarthritis Research: Part 1: Epidemiology, Pathophysiology, and Current Imaging Approaches

This first of a 2-part series of articles recounts the key points presented in a collaborative symposium sponsored jointly by the Arthritis Foundation and the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society with the intent to survey the state of scientific knowledge related to incidence, diagnosis, pathologic mechanisms, and injection treatment options for osteoarthritis (OA) of the foot and ankle. Part 1 overviews areas of epidemiology and pathophysiology, current approaches in imaging, diagnostic and therapeutic injections, and genetics. Opportunities for future research are discussed. The OA scientific community, including funding agencies, academia, industry, and regulatory agencies, must recognize the needs of patients that suffer from arthritis of foot and ankle.

The QIBA Profile for MRI-based Compositional Imaging of Knee Cartilage

OA Drug Development Workshop Presentations and Papers

Experts discussed many aspects of OA and development of drugs.  Topics included the epidemiology, challenges to assessing disease progression, potential biomarkers, difficulties evaluating long-term benefits to the patient, and other challenges to achieving FDA approval.  The workshop was co-sponsored by the FDA and the AF.
