Methadone hydrochloride

Drug Name(s): Methadose, generic

Class: Analgesics

Type: Opioid

Used to treat moderate to severe, ongoing pain. Not to be used on an as-needed basis.

Dosage

Form(s): tablet, liquid 

Starting dose: 2.5 to 10 mg every 8 to 12 hours. Dose may be slowly increased until desired effects are achieved.

Special Instructions

Use the lowest dose for the shortest amount of time possible for pain relief.

Do not increase the dose on your own or stop treatment abruptly unless told to do so by a doctor.

Do not use on an as-needed basis unless instructed by your doctor.

Do not drive, operate machinery or perform other potentially dangerous activities until you know whether the medication will affect your ability to do them safely.

Potential Side Effects

Constipation; dizziness; drowsiness; heart palpitations; itching; lightheadedness; mental confusion; nausea; shortness of breath; sweating; urinary retention; vomiting

Be Aware

Opioids can slow breathing and suppress the cough reflex. Before taking an opioid, tell your doctor if you have a history of lung disease or breathing difficulties.

Taking opioids with certain other drugs can increase the risk of dangerous side effects. Especially tell your doctor if you take antihistamines (allergy medications), tranquilizers, sleeping pills, muscle relaxants or other pain medication, or if you have a history of alcohol or drug abuse.
