Dr. Rowland W. (Bing) Chang Takes the Helm as New Board Chair of the Arthritis Foundation

Nationally acclaimed physician and researcher, Dr. Chang, focuses on scientific discovery to help those with arthritis live a full life

ATLANTA (December 2, 2016) – Last month, after serving as the board chair elect for a year, Rowland W. (Bing) Chang, MD, MPH, assumed the role of board chair for the Arthritis Foundation. As the first active physician to serve as the board chair in decades, Dr. Chang brings to the role his medical and research expertise combined with a commitment to finding a cure for arthritis. At the Foundation’s board meeting in November, Michael Ortman, immediate past board chair, welcomed and officially passed the gavel to Dr. Chang.

As a professor of the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, Dr. Chang is a rheumatologist, epidemiologist and health services researcher with more than 34 years of practice and research experience. In addition to his professional experience, Dr. Chang’s involvement and service to the Arthritis Foundation spans 30 years. During his time with the Foundation, he has focused on advocacy, public policy, research and public health activities by serving on standing committees as well as sitting on the board of directors.

“This is the first time in years that a physician has chaired our board – and now couldn’t be a more opportune time,” said Ann M. Palmer, president and CEO of the Arthritis Foundation. “Dr. Chang is on the frontlines in the fight against arthritis and brings a wealth of experience and unique perspectives, which align with the Foundation’s strong commitment to scientific discovery in the quest to find a cure for arthritis.”

Dr. Chang plans to lead the Foundation’s scientific agenda and new, programmatic initiatives to focus on the following four initiatives, among other duties as board chair:

  • Cultivate a new generation of rheumatologists by reshaping clinical fellowship programs to assure more physicians with expertise in rheumatology are trained to meet increasing patient needs;
  • Advance osteoarthritis treatments through pioneering research that yields new, innovative health care options;
  • Conquer childhood arthritis via a renewed commitment to families of children with juvenile arthritis and strengthen Arthritis Foundation partnerships to accelerate research; and
  • Improve the quality of care from the patient’s perspective by establishing a learning health system in which patients work with their health care providers to achieve the best possible outcomes.

“My commitment to the Arthritis Foundation is strong and steadfast,” said Dr. Chang. “Every day, we touch the lives of those with arthritis, and it is our duty to accelerate scientific discovery and help find new treatments and ultimately a cure for arthritis.”

Dr. Chang received his medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine and holds a Master of Public Health from Harvard. He did his rheumatology fellowship at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.
