POSITION SUMMARY (Basic purpose or primary function of job)

The Vice President, Principal Gifts is responsible for the overall management of major gifts program, Leadership Council, building relationships and personally securing gift from high net worth individuals in support of the Arthritis Foundation priorities.  This role will manage Major Gift Officer(s), Grant and Foundation Manager and Prospect Research Manager positions. 


JOB RESPONSIBILITIES (Principal responsibilities or job duties)

  • Achieve organizational major gift gifts goals.
  • Pursue a portfolio of major donors in partnership with senior staff leadership and board members.
  • Develop and propose strategies for cultivation and solicitation of major gifts, including: determining ongoing relationships with prospect/donor; recommending specific level of gift; identifying those to be involved in cultivation and subsequent solicitation; ensuring that solicitations are carried out.
  • Work closely with other development team members, including Planned Giving and market-based fundraising staff, to ensure effective coordination and to reinforce the prospect relationship continuum.
  • Facilitates and coordinates all communication with these prospects and among the prospect’s organizational relationships. Promotes positive relations with these prospects and donors.
  • Evaluates various gift opportunities and giving vehicles and recommends the most suitable for a particular donor, working closely with program and other development and executive staff in the process, as needed.
  • Assist with the strategy for and creation of written communications and proposals appropriate to a donor’s interests.
  • Participates (often in concert with others) in gift solicitations to fund organizational needs and programs.
  • Drive stewardship strategies for principal gift donors, including facilitating the creation of donor reports as needed.
  • Co-ordinate an effective program for acknowledgement and recognition of donors.
  • Maintain prospect and donor records in the organization’s database.
  • Support the recruitment and staffing of a Leadership Council charged with opening doors to new donors with significant major gift potential.
  • May travel (possibly extensively) commensurate with the organization’s standard expectations for fundraising activity, contact and travel.
  • Other duties as assigned by SVP Revenue Strategy




  • Five or more years of individual major gift fundraising with personal success cultivating, soliciting and stewarding six and seven figure donors.
  • Experience managing volunteers and board committees.
  • Ability to present complex funding opportunities to prospective donors in person and in writing.
  • Ability to articulate a case for support so that individuals “buy into” the vision/mission/goals of the organization, demonstrated by a track record in closing six- and seven-figure gifts.
  • Sophisticated and polished interpersonal communication skills (oral and written).
  • Ability to initiate, analyze, monitor, evaluate and alter strategic advancement plans.
  • Professional credibility, intellectual depth, maturity, and collaborative skills to lead others by influence.
  • Creative and entrepreneurial outlook with a strong intellectual curiosity.
  • Ability to adapt to changing circumstances in a complex environment.
  • Bachelor’s degree required.




Develop and propose strategies for solicitation of major gifts


Establish and maintain a donor cultivation cycle and gift stewardship program to ensure that new major donors are developed.


Coordinate cultivation events


Support the recruitment and staffing of a nationwide volunteer leadership committee charged with opening doors to new donors with significant major gift potential
