POSITION SUMMARY (Basic purpose or primary function of job)

The Vice President, Major Gifts is responsible for the overall management of the launch of a new major giving campaign aimed at securing support from donors who are capable of making six- and seven-figure gifts. This individual will cultivate and grow a personal portfolio of prospects, manage the Grant and Foundation Manager and Prospect Research Manager positions as well as lead various administrative projects related to the build-out of the campaign.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES (Principal responsibilities or job duties)

  • Manage a portfolio of major donors in partnership with local market staff and volunteers.

  • Develop and propose strategies for solicitation of major gifts, including: determining ongoing relationships with prospect/donor; recommending specific level of gift; identifying those to be involved in cultivation and subsequent solicitation; ensuring that solicitations are carried out.

  • Work closely with other development team members, including Planned Giving and market-based fundraising staff, to ensure effective coordination and to reinforce the prospect relationship continuum.

  • Co-ordinate an effective program for acknowledgement and recognition of donors.

  • Establish and maintain a donor cultivation cycle and gift stewardship program to ensure that new major donors are developed, have opportunities to increase their level of support annually and enjoy a close relationship to the organization.

  • Coordinate cultivation events.

  • Maintain prospect and donor records in the organization’s database.

  • Support the recruitment and staffing of a nationwide volunteer leadership committee charged with opening doors to new donors with significant major gift potential.

  • Other duties as assigned by SVP Revenue Strategy

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION

  • Five or more years of individual major gift fundraising, preferably in a voluntary health setting, and two or more years of management experience.

  • Bachelor’s degree required.

  • Ability to articulate a case for support so that individuals “buy into” the vision/mission/goals of the organization, demonstrated by a track record in closing six- and seven-figure gifts.

  • Sophisticated and polished interpersonal communication skills (oral and written).

  • Ability to initiate, analyze, monitor, evaluate and alter strategic advancement plans.

  • Knowledge of tax laws that impact charitable giving, personal assets and estates.
