POSITION SUMMARY (Basic purpose or primary function of job)

The Email Marketing Manager is responsible for the strategy and day-to-day, hands-on execution of email marketing programs in support of Arthritis Foundation communication to constituents and donors. S/he will manage the execution of email and marketing automation campaigns in Marketo, from setup, targeting and testing to deployment, maintenance and data monitoring. They will collaborate with multiple teams and own the email process from start to finish. Additionally, this individual maintains a current understanding of email marketing best practices and applies them to the execution of Arthritis Foundation email campaigns. The Email Marketing Manager determines target audiences, devises and launches email campaigns to create general awareness or pursue specific call to action. This individual must be familiar with email marketing automation and will implement strategies and best practices to nurture leads through timely and well thought out email content.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES (Principal responsibilities or job duties)

  1. Manage and execute digital marketing campaigns: including set-up, targeting, data monitoring, scheduling, tracking, testing, QA, and deployment.
  2. Ensure marketing messages are conveyed clearly and delivered properly to prospects. Ensure internal and external messages follow industry policies and best practices.
  3. Develop and implement a messaging and content personalization strategy for email and newsletter communications to promote Arthritis Foundation programs, engagement, and fundraising. Work with content team to develop and deploy enewsletters.
  4. Maintains the marketing database ensuring clean data, data segmentation according to digital strategies recommendations and to maintain healthy list growth. Coordinate and monitor the maintenance, integrity, and security of several databases.
  5. Include persuasive 'call-to-actions' in content, promotion, and fundraising.
  6. Analyze performance metrics, providing recommendations to improve effectiveness of email campaigns.
  7. Work closely with the search engine marketing and analytics to develop meaningful content that reflects user needs.
  8. Have expert knowledge of Marketo, including setting up nurture streams to create and execute drip email marketing campaigns.
  9. Create and maintain a list of automation rules to support the digital marketing efforts of the Foundation.
  10. Works closely with the marketing services manager and the development team to ensure fundraising/partner/sponsorship targets are met.
  11. Works closely with events and local staff to support recruitment and engagement activities for local events.
  12. Have knowledge of lead scoring implementation and best practices.


  1. BS/BA degree in Marketing or related field.
  2. Prior experience as an email marketing manager or digital marketing specialist
  3. Hands on experience with HTML and content management systems
  4. Knowledge of SEO/SEM and Google Analytics
  5. Proficiency with Marketo, required.
  6. Familiarity with analytical and database tools
  7. Excellent written communication, editing, and copywriting skills
  8. Strong project management skills
  9. An ability to work under tight deadlines.


Create, maintain, and optimize all email communications for the organization.


Enhance and grow the Foundation’s lead-nurturing, drip marketing strategies.


Report on health & status of the Foundation’s ongoing email efforts & specific campaign targets.


Create and maintain emails lists, segmentation, automation rules, etc in Marketo.
