2009 Bone Bash Honoree
The Arthritis Foundation Western Pennsylvania Chapter is proud to announce Dr. Freddie H. Fu as the 2009 Bone Bash Honoree.

Dr. Freddie H. Fu
Freddie H. Fu, M.D., professor and chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at UPMC and the University of Pittsburgh, is known worldwide for pioneering surgical techniques to treat sports-related injuries and for his extensive research in the biomechanics of such injuries. He frequently is quoted by local and national media. The founding medical director of the UPMC Center for Sports Medicine, Dr. Fu sees both athletic and non-athletic patients of all ages and is head team physician for the University of Pittsburgh Department of Athletics.
Dr. Fu is a pioneered world leader in anatomic double-bundle ACL reconstruction surgery. The “double-bundle” technique restores an injured ACL’s natural anatomy and function by replacing both bundles of the ACL instead of repairing just one bundle as in the traditional, single-bundle ACL repair surgery still used by the majority of orthopaedic surgeons. Dr. Fu and his research team currently have more than 20 studies completed or under way to evaluate the merits of the double-bundle procedure, which may include lowering the risk of developing arthritis later in life.
Because of his commitment to furthering surgical techniques and research to help those with arthritis, Dr. Fu was chosen as the Arthritis Foundation of Western Pennsylvania’s 2009 Gala & Testimonial Dinner Honoree. He is currently serving a two-year term as president of the International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine, where he has been a board member for 10 years. He recently served as president of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, among numerous other leadership roles in leading professional and scientific organizations. Dr. Fu also is consistently listed in Pittsburgh Magazine’s annual “Best Doctors” issue. In 2008, he received the Jerome Bettis Bus Stops Here Foundation’s Humanitarian Award for community service and was honored by the Heinz History Center as a History Maker in celebration of Pittsburgh’s 250th birthday.
Dr. Fu’s research efforts have led to more than 125 professional awards and honors, nearly 700 presentations and editorship of 26 major orthopaedic textbooks. He also is the author or co-author of more than 275 peer-reviewed articles and 83 book chapters on the management of sports injuries.
Dr. Fu is the David Silver Professor and Chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He holds a secondary appointment in the Department of Physical Therapy at Pitt’s School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences and is an adjunct professor of health and physical activity at Pitt’s School of Education.
Dr. Fu received undergraduate and post-graduate degrees at Dartmouth College and Dartmouth Medical School before earning his medical degree at Pitt in 1977. Continuing his training at Pitt, he then completed a residency in orthopaedic surgery and a fellowship in orthopaedic research. Dr. Fu also fulfilled an internship in general surgery at Brown University and an international fellowship at the Hanover Trauma Center in Germany. He joined Pitt’s Department of Orthopaedic Surgery faculty in 1982.
