Raising Arthritis Awareness in West Virginia
Event Gathered Community Leaders to Learn More About Arthritis
Sixty-five people attended “Moving Closer to a Cure: An Evening with the Arthritis Foundation held May 30, 2013 in Charleston, WV.
Speakers included John Hardin, M.D., Shelly Kafka, M.D., and Kirsten Smith. Julie Warden, Mrs. West Virginia International, greeted guests and served as Mistress of Ceremonies for the evening. Warden, who has rheumatoid arthritis, has made arthritis awareness her pageant platform issue.
Dr. Hardin, the featured speaker, discussed advances in arthritis treatments. He most recently served as national Vice President of Research for the Arthritis Foundation. Shelly Kafka, M.D., president of the West Virginia Rheumatology Society, addressed the challenges people with arthritis face in the state. Kirsten Smith, chair of the Arthritis Foundation’s West Virginia Board of Advisors, spoke of her experience with arthritis beginning with her diagnosis at age two. Smith also serves as Vice Chair of the Great Lakes Region Board of Directors for the Arthritis Foundation.
