ATLANTA (June 2009) – David Shuey, an active Arthritis Foundation volunteer, is bicycling across America to raise funds to prevent, control and cure arthritis, the nation’s most common cause of disability.
Shuey, who has spinal stenosis and osteoarthritis, is riding a 4,000 mile trail for 67 days from west to east coast to raise money for arthritis research and to increase awareness about the effects of arthritis on the 46 million people living with it. The ride will stop in many cities along its route.
The cross-country quest is in honor of Shuey’s mother, who spent the last 15 years in a wheelchair, unable to walk due to spinal damage caused by arthritis. “Riding across America may seem like a huge undertaking, but cannot compare to the pain and suffering that my mom and others with arthritis endure every day,” said Shuey.
Arthritis also has been a constant struggle for Shuey. Since arthritis in his knees prevented him from running as a form of exercise at the age of 31, Shuey has become an avid bicyclist. By his early 50s, he developed arthritis in his neck and back.
Shuey’s cross-country ride begins in Seattle on June 5, 2009, and will end on his 60th birthday, August 9, 2009, in Cape May, NJ.
Shuey will share diary entries and photos online throughout the ride. Follow his journey (http://community.arthritis.org/David9/blog).
