Shopping for Shades

By Bryan D. Vargo

Sure, style is important, but when choosing sunglasses, your first priority should be how well they deflect the sun’s harmful rays. A growing body of scientific evidence links prolonged ultraviolet (UV) exposure to cataracts and macular degeneration. The more your eyes are exposed to UV light over the years, the greater your risk. So wear your shades year-round. Here are some shopping tips:

Check the Label:
Look for the words “full UV protection,” “100 percent UV protection” or “UV 400.” Most manufacturers adhere to voluntary standards. Polarized lenses help cut glare on shiny surfaces, but not all polarized lenses provide UV protection.

Shop All Price Points: A higher price does not necessarily mean better protection. You can find UV glasses at all price points.

Tune in to Color:
Amber lenses are best; they block blue light believed to cause macular degeneration. Avoid blue lenses that let in more blue light.

Get full coverage:
The frame should be large enough to cover your entire eye socket, and fit snugly against your eyebrows and temples. Wraparound styles provide maximum protection.
