Travel to an exciting

  Motion Marathon Program

By Suzanne Hall

Bert Jones, general manager of Outdoors Unlimited, has osteoarthritis in his thumbs and neck. But that doesn't stop the Flagstaff, Ariz., resident from leading rafting and camping trips through the Grand Canyon. He just brings extra pillows to ease the discomfort of sleeping on the ground. Outdoors Unlimited prides itself on making the Grand Canyon accessible to all. They make arrangements for everything from extra pillows and medication storage to wheelchairs and other special equipment.

"We also adjust activity levels when necessary and offer the option of shortening the trips," Jones says.

When choosing an adventure travel company, explore less strenuous trips. When calling for information, talk openly about your needs. On some International Nature & Cultural Adventures trips, for example, most of the sightseeing is done by boat.

Choosing the right trip is essential. "Some of our trips are quite strenuous," says Robyn German of Mountain Travel Sobek. "Others, like our Galapagos Islands and Asia excursions, are easier and may be more comfortable for people with arthritis."

You don't have to avoid adventure travel because you have arthritis. Just do your homework beforehand. Below, you'll find some companies that will help you get started.
