Laura Ferguson
Painter with scoliosis and osteoarthritis (OA) in New York
|
When arthritis forced Ferguson to abandon her career as a graphic artist in 1989, she became fascinated with imagery of the human body. Using her personal
X-rays, MRIs and, most recently, 3D CT scans, she draws and paints her body in motion from an internal perspective.
The Noho Gallery, Snug Harbor Cultural Center, Center for Book Arts and Cornell University Medical College have exhibited Ferguson's work. She was commissioned by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons to create the keynote artwork for the traveling exhibition "emotion Pictures."
"Crouching Figure With Visible Skeleton" is part of an ongoing body of work Ferguson has titled "The Visible Skeleton Series," which she plans to turn into a book.
Artistic Expression: "I want to convey how our insides are as much a part of us as our outsides and that we should be able to really feel that sense of gracefulness and wholeness."
