So you've applied to a prescription drug assistance program, but they say you don't qualify. And your insurance, if you have any, just won't cover the drugs you need. It may seem like time to panic, but don't lose hope just yet. Here are some actions you can take that just might make the difference.
Exhaust all of your options. If you've only applied to one assistance program, try them all. Cast your net wide and see what's out there.
Get help. Take advantage of all the services and organizations available to help you wade through the prescription drug program options (see
"Resources to Help") or solicit help from your doctor, employer, a benefits director, social worker or lawyer if necessary.
Document, document, document. Always keep good records of your medical history. Having details available that show which drugs were successful and which ones were failures could mean the difference between getting your drug approved or not. Nancy Olsen, MD, a rheumatologist in Nashville, Tenn., agrees. "The more information you can give about why you need medication the better."
Make sure you know and understand your insurance plan's guidelines. Contact your benefits manager if you have questions.
Take advantage of an appeals process if the drug you need is denied. Visit
www.insure.com for information on appealing a denied claim. This site also provides solid information on how employer-provided insurance works.
