Volunteering

Have you ever thought that you wanted to do something more meaningful with your life? Maybe you feel stuck in a routine, stressed out at work and unsatisfied with what you are doing with your time. Consider volunteering! Not only will you be giving back to your community, but you will meet new people and help yourself become healthier. Studies show that doing good for others actually does good for you.

Remember to take a ten-minute meditation break. During this time, think about what makes you happy. Is it spending time with children or advocating for others with local politicians? Do you like to garden or play soccer? You can coach a neighborhood league team, maintain a garden at your local park, become a big brother or sister, or join a citizen's action group.

After your meditation, make a list of areas in which you’d like to explore being a volunteer. Keep in mind your time, abilities and skills and any limitations your arthritis might impose. Then go find a place you can spend your time.

When it comes to volunteering, you are in control. You choose what you want to do and what you don’t. Make sure you say "no" when you need to and don’t feel guilty. Saying "no" to one thing will mean you can say "yes" to something else.

You’ll be pleasantly surprised to find that all this good work you do makes you feel great. You may find your stress level is down, your self-esteem has risen and you have a whole new group of friends. Don’t forget to have fun!
