Dr. Neil Segal
My name is Neil Segal and I am the face of arthritis research.
One out of two adults -- including myself -- has osteoarthritis. The Arthritis Foundation plays a critical role in our lives by supporting innovative research and by communicating the vital need for federal funding of arthritis research that has the potential to improve lives.
I am the recipient of an Arthritis Foundation Innovative Research Grant in 2012, and I believe we have the tools to potentially identify who will develop OA before it occurs, and to figure out where it will occur.
My work focuses on finding ways to use common imaging techniques, like X-rays, CT scans or MRIs, to generate maps of the stress on the cartilage in the knee joint. This will enable us to assess risk of the disease, help those who don’t yet have OA avoid getting it, and guide prescription therapies to reduce progression of OA. My research even has the potential to reduce costs for health insurers and employers.
