Belimumab in Phase III

BLISS-76, one of two pivotal Phase III clinical trials of belimumab (LymphoStat-B), a human monoclonal antibody that inhibits the activity of B-lymphocyte stimulator, has begun. The program includes two double-blind, placebo-controlled, multicenter trials to evaluate the efficacy and safety of belimumab in the treatment of active systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The data from BLISS-76 will be analyzed after 52 weeks to support a potential application with the FDA. The second trial, BLISS-52, is expected to begin in the first half of 2007.


Pain Medication in Phase I

A Phase I clinical trial of ADL5859, a new oral pain killer that targets the delta opioid receptor, has begun. The study is designed to investigate the safety, tolerability and pharmacokinetics of ADL5859 in healthy volunteers following twice-a-day dosing for seven days. A second compound, ADL5747, is in preclinical development with an investigational new drug application targeted for submission to the FDA by the end of the year.
