Speakers’ Biographies

Dr. Criswell received her M.D. (1986) from the University of California, San Francisco and her M.P.H. (1992) from the University of California, Berkeley. She completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Rheumatology at the University of California, San Francisco. She joined the faculty of the UCSF Division of Rheumatology in 1992.  Dr. Criswell also completed a D.Sc. degree in genetic epidemiology at the Netherlands Institute of Health Sciences.  In recognition of her research and mentoring contributions, Dr. Criswell received the Henry Kunkel Young Investigator Award from the American College of Rheumatology in 2003 and the Kirkland Scholar Award for the period 2006 through 2008.

In 2008, Dr. Criswell was named the Kenneth H. Fye, MD, Endowed Chair in Rheumatology and in July 2011 she assumed the role of Rheumatology Division Chief at UCSF Medical Center.

Dr. Behrens moved to Genentech in 2006 following 20+ years in academia, with a focus on three major themes: 1) development of B lymphocytes; 2) genetics of human autoimmune diseases, especially systemic lupus erythematosus; and 3) identification of biomarkers for lupus and rheumatoid arthritis. Recently, Dr. Behrens has been particularly intrigued by the problem of applying cutting-edge genetic and proteomic technologies into the clinic to answer important questions like 'How active is the disease in this patient?', and 'How likely is this patient to respond to a particular drug?'

In addition to his work at Genentech, Dr. Behrens is an Adjunct Professor of Medicine at the University of Minnesota Medical School, where he previously was the head of the Autoimmunity Center.

Lecture Focus

This year the Knowles Lecture will be in two parts, with two excellent speakers. Since the first association of genetic markers of rheumatic diseases was demonstrated more than 25 years ago, a great deal more has been uncovered.  Dr. Criswell, as an international expert, will review our current information about genetic disease associations focusing on Reumatoid Arthritis and SLE. Dr. Berhrens will then focus on therapeutic endeavors to utilize the genetic information in pharmaceutical development.

The 2012 Knowles Lecture will be held at:
Mission Bay Conference Center at UCSF
1675 Owens Avenue, Fisher Banquet Room
