Inflammatory Immune Responses in Rheumatoid Arthritis and Atherosclerosis
Keynote Speaker
Cornelia Weyand, MD, PhD
Professor of Medicine, Immunology & Rheumatology
Stanford University School of Medicine

Dr. Cornelia Weyand is a Professor of Medicine, Immunology and Rheumatology, at Stanford University School of Medicine. Before coming to Stanford in 2009, Dr. Weyand held the David C. Lowance Chair in Medicine and directed the Lowance Center for Human Immunology and Rheumatology at Emory University in Atlanta. From 2000-2004, she was the Barbara Woodward Lips Professor of Medicine and Immunology at Mayo Medical and Graduate School in Rochester, MN. Since the early 1990s, she has led a research team investigating the role of the immune system in chronic inflammatory and autoimmune disease. Dr. Weyand has had a special interest in immune responses that initiate and sustain tissue damage in rheumatoid arthritis, atherosclerosis and large vessel vasculitis. She has been honored with numerous national and international awards.
Lecture Focus: Patients with inflammatory rheumatic diseases are well known to have an increased risk of cardiovascular complications especially coronary artery disease (CAD). There are parallels in the pathogenesis of both CAD and rheumatoid arthritis, which may explain this increased risk. Dr. Cornelia Weyand has been in the forefront of research on this issue.
Lecture Overview: Dr. Weyand will discuss
Lecture Objectives: Upon completion of this course, participants should have improved skills and strategies to competently:
- Become aware of the increased risk of CAD in this patient group regardless of patient age or other CAD risk factors.
- Develop a reasonable patient surveillance system for CAD and other vascular events.
- Apply the knowledge to patients with inflammatory rheumatic diseases to include life style changes, appropriate use of DMARD, biologic, and immunosuppresive agents as well as lipid lowering drugs with the goal to improve CAD and vascular event outcomes.
- Stimulate physicians managing these patients to enter them into research programs and protocols that improve knowledge and assess outcomes.
