Arthritis is a term that refers to a group of over 100 diseases and conditions that primarily affect the joints, muscles and surrounding tissues. Arthritis symptoms can primarily include pain, stiffness, or swelling in and around the joints. Anyone who is experiencing these symptoms should seek prompt medical attention. Early and accurate diagnosis of arthritis can help people avoid undue pain, limited activity, and permanent disability.

If you are experiencing joint symptoms, you might want to consult an arthritis specialist, called a rheumatologist. Rheumatologists are doctors who specialize in treating people who have persistent aches and pains. They are specially trained to determine whether you have arthritis and, if so, the kind you have and the best course of treatment for you. A rheumatologist first receives training in internal medicine or pediatrics, then further specialized training.

The Arthritis Foundation Michigan Chapter maintains this list of rheumatologists, called an Arthritis Specialists List. A physician is listed after completing and returning an application documenting his/her eligibility.

Physicians identified on this Arthritis Specialists List have stated that they are licensed in the State of Michigan, that they are accepting new patients, and that they meet at least one of the following criteria for specialists in rheumatology:

Board certified in rheumatology
Completed a rheumatology training program accredited by:
• Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education
• Committee on Graduate Medical Education of the American Osteopathic Association
Qualified and board-eligible in rheumatology
Trained before board certification was available and meeting all three of the following criteria:
a) Completion of training in rheumatology.
b) Five or more years of experience in the field of rheumatology
c) Completion of 24 hours of credit in accredited medical education programs in rheumatology over the last three years.

The Arthritis Foundation Michigan Chapter is not in a position to fully evaluate the professional qualifications and competence of individual physicians. The inclusion of a physician in this Arthritis Specialists List should not be interpreted as an endorsement by the Michigan Chapter of a particular physician’s competence and/or qualifications. In instances where a physician is listed as specializing in diagnosis and treatment of a specific form(s) of arthritis, that is based on the physician’s own self-assessment.

When they were last surveyed, the following rheumatologists indicated that they were accepting new patients with fibromyalgia diagnoses. Please refer to previous pages in the Arthritis Specialists Directory, organized by county, to locate contact information for these practitioners. Inclusion on this list does not guarantee that a patient will be able to schedule an appointment with a physician; a physician’s ability to accept new patients may change at any time.
