Medicare Beneficiary Alert from the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) is considering steep cuts in the 2014 Medicare payments to orthopedic surgeons who perform hip and knee replacement surgery.  If Medicare does cut what it pays doctors, it could make it harder for Medicare patients to find doctors to perform their hip and knee replacement surgeries, or they may have to wait longer for care.

Medicare should not cut rates for hip and knee replacement surgery without giving patients a full explanation, and without a fair comment opportunity. If you have questions about this issue or would like a sample letter,  contact your orthopedic physician.  Letters must be received no later than September 6, 2013. For electronic submission of letters:!submitComment;D=CMS-2013-0155-0010
