Family Spotlight: The Weavers
Meet 7- year-old Cadie Weaver! Cadie was diagnosed with Juvenile Arthritis (JA) at age 3 ½, but her mother, Melissa Weaver, said that Cadie experienced swelling in her left ankle for about a year prior to her diagnosis. Since then, she has been close to remission, but recently had had a difficult flare. (Click here to learn more about remission.)
At her last doctor appointment, Cadie had swelling in both knees, both wrists, and the middle joint of every finger. It has been a battle to remain healthy and get the arthritis under control. Cadie is “so strong and even though she has missed a lot of school recently, she is still doing great in first grade,” Melissa said.
The Weaver family first heard about the Arthritis Foundation from Cadie’s doctor, Barbara Adams, M.D. at the University of Michigan, C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital. Dr. Adams told them about the great information available on the Arthritis Foundation’s website. From there, they learned about the JA Conference and had the opportunity to attend last year's event in St. Louis, Mo. Melissa said the family enjoyed the conference and they encourage all families of children with JA to attend.
Returning home from the conference, Cadie and her family decided to participate in their first Arthritis Walk held in October 2012 at Michigan State University. “Cadie’s Team” is already off to a great start in 2013 having hosted a Quartermania event in January and another this month to raise funds for the fight against arthritis. She has also recruited her Daisy troop to join her walk team and raise arthritis awareness. And Cadie is especially excited that this year she will be able to attend Camp Dakota – a week-long camp for children and teens with JA - for the first time.
