| WHY: |
Throughout their life together, Dan and Lou Ann have witnessed the devastatingeffects of several diseases among family members, including Rheumatoid Arthritis, Alzheimer’s, and Muscular Dystrophy. They want to make a difference in the lives of others who are going through similar situations; their hope is to bond with families who have children who are dealing with disabilities, physical challenges and serious illnesses. It was after hearing one of our young Tribute speakers tell her story about living with Juvenile Arthritis that drew them to our cause. Their caring, generous hearts and professional leadership define their commitment to our community. By providing us this opportunity, they also enable the Arthritis Foundation to raise funds that will support programs, services and research for this chronic and debilitating disease affecting more than 2.3 million adults and 10,300 children in Michigan. Arthritis is the leading cause of disability in the United States. Across Michigan, Arthritis affects 1 in 3 adults – imposing work limitations on one-third of Michigan’s working-age population (18 – 64), increasingly affecting retirees, and imposing nearly $6 billion in costs of care and lost productivity in our state annually. The Gaydou’s have been involved in the Tribute to Excellence since it began in 2002. Their list of achievements, philanthropy, and leadership is long; their support to the agencies and organizations that strive to make a difference is an inspiration to us all. We applaud Dan and Lou Ann for their strong advocacy for the people of West Michigan. |
