The mission of the Arthritis Foundation is to improve lives through leadership in the prevention, control and cure of arthritis related diseases.  The Arthritis Foundation, Southeast Region is working to provide empowering support and information to the more than 856,000 adults and nearly 4,800 children in Louisiana the fight the unacceptable pain of arthritis each day. Specialists Join Staff at LSU Shreveport

Two new specialists in treating juvenile arthritis have come to Louisiana. Dr. Vidya Raman and Dr. Sarwat Umer joined the staff of LSU Children’s Hospital in Shreveport during 2011, and are now treaing children with juvenile arthritis and autoimmune diseases at their new clinic. The two physicians are fellowship trained in Pediatric Rheumatology, and join a precious few specialists who provide these services across Louisiana. Dr. Raman completed her fellowship training in Pediatric Rheumatology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri, and is the only Board Certified Pediatric Rheumatologist in northern Louisiana and the Ark-La-Tex area. Dr. Umer completed her adult rheumatology fellowship at LSU Health Sciences Shreveport, and received an additional year of training in Pediatric Rheumatology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. Welcome Drs. Raman and Umer!

Expanded Coverage for Pre-existing Conditions

On May 31st, Arthritis Foundation President and CEO Dr. John H. Klippel joined HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius in support of changes to the government insurance programs that will make it easier for Americans with pre-existing conditions to get health insurance coverage. The Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Program (PCIP) will offer more Americans with chronic conditions, like arthritis, access to affordable coverage. The PCIP is for people who are unable to purchase coverage due to a specific pre-existing medical condition.
