Nominate Someone

Two nomination letters are required, one from the primary nominator and another from the secondary nominator. Nomination letters must be received by the Research Department by July 1, 2009.

The Primary Nominator's letter should thoroughly cover all of the following points:

  • Brief summary of the nominee's training and background.
  • Brief summary of the nominee's significant research accomplishments prior to the major effort to be recognized by the Howley Prize.
  • Statement of background of the major scientific problems or area to which nominee has made contributions to be recognized. Description of how the nominee's work stands alone from the work of others in the area.
  • Cite specifically with reference to his or her published work, the nominee's achievements and how they relate to those of other major contributions to fields. Particularly, cite examples of confirmation of the nominee's work and its impact on subsequent research of others.
  • Any major technical or methodologic contribution of the nominee such as new, mores sensitive or more precise analytical methods, adaptations to measurement techniques, or new principles, or of those taken from other fields.
  • Specifically delineate how the nominee functions within his or her research group as the intellectual and motivational force. In situations in which the nominee has worked very closely with one or two other individuals over an extended period of time, the relative role of the nominee in such collaborations should be clarified.
  • Evidence of respect for the nominee's work in this area by peers -- major invited lectures, awards, editorship or symposia, etc.
  • Direct relevance to and impact on understanding, treatment or prevention of rheumatic diseases as a result of the nominee's work.
  • Impact on initiating and sustaining the field of arthritis research.
  • Broad scientific implications of the nominee's work to any other disciplines, clinical or basic.
  • Your own qualifications to interpret and evaluate the nominee and his or her work.
  • Important relevant personal characteristics of the nominee such as ability to attract and develop young scientists, deliver lectures, etc.

In exceptional situations, two individuals (very rarely three) from the same research group may be nominated as a team, if it is clear that the contribution of each was distinct and yet essential for the whole. A single letter may be written if all the points emphasized above are covered adequately.

The Secondary Nominator's letter should shed additional light from another point of view on the significance and impact of the work, on the originality and independence of the nominee, quality of his or her trainees, or any important personal characteristics.
Provide a current curriculum vitae on the candidate.
