Holiday Decorating Shortcuts
Go for festive! Forget the fussy stuff.
By Sharon Anne Waldrop
1. Lay on the lights. Net lighting can be quickly draped over outdoor shrubs or your inside tree. www.noveltylights.com, 4’ x 6’ sheet: $16.
2. Show off naturally. Lay prunings from an evergreen tree across the mantle or on a foyer table.
3. Make pillows festive. Holiday pillowcases can be custom embroidered. www.pillowcasegram.com, $20 for up to 35 letters.
4. Downsize the tree. Pick one that’s less than 5 feet tall. It will still have impact but be easier to handle and decorate. Or use a small “pre-lit” artificial tree. www.christmaslightsetc.com, starting at $120.
5. Tune in your way. Create your own holiday “radio station” at www.pandora.com.
6. Breathe in the spice. Fill your home with the aroma of simmering orange slices, cloves and cinnamon sticks in a pot of water on the stove.
7. Deck the doorways. Punch a hole in holiday cards from years past. String together with ribbon and drape over a doorway.
8. Simplify the centerpiece. Add food coloring to a clear bowl of water and illuminate it with floating candles.
9. Say it clear. Post a removable vinyl decal with a festive saying to your wall. www.alphabetgardendesigns.com, $25 to $55.
10. Tie on the color. Give everyday items, such as potted plants, lamps and banisters, holiday flair by tying wire ribbon around them.
