ARTHRITIS FOUNDATION AWARDS NEW RESEARCH GRANT
Congratulations to Dominik Haudenschild, Ph.D., of the University of California, Davis, who received an Arthritis Foundation Innovative Research grant of $100,000 for his work on osteoarthritis.
Dr. Haudenschild is investigating treatment of post-traumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA) in the young athletic population. He hypothesizes that certain types of sports-related joint injuries lead to osteoarthritis, and that PTOA begins at the cellular level just after occurrence of the joint injury. Current clinical care does nothing at the time of injury to prevent the onset of PTOA, when the optimal time frame for effective therapeutic intervention may be immediately after the joint injury. The Arthritis Foundation’s research grant will support Dr. Haudenschild’s exploration of a treatment strategy that will delay or prevent the onset of post-traumatic osteoarthritis.
We applaud Dr. Haudenschild’s ground-breaking research which will lead to a potential reduction in the future burden of osteoarthritis for today’s young and active population.
