Frequently Asked Questions

If you are considering becoming a member of the Joints in Motion team, you probably have a few questions. Following are answers to the most frequently asked questions from people just like you. If you still have questions, don’t worry. You can contact us anytime and we can give you the information you need.

Can I really run or walk 26.2 miles?

Each athlete runs or walks in honor of someone with arthritis. This can either be someone with whom they have a personal relationship, or your chapter will assign you a local honoree. One in five adults has arthritis, so chances are you already know someone who is affected. Knowing someone with arthritis will give you more incentive to complete the training and help potential donors understand what the program is all about.

Can I do a half-marathon (13.1 miles)?
The Joints in Motion Training Team offers a number of races that have a half-marathon option. Whatever distance you choose, the Joints in Motion Training Team will see you to the finish line. |

Can walkers participate?
YES!! Walk it!! Your Joints in Motion Team has designed a training program that takes into account the specific needs of our walkers. In fact, 50 percent of our team is made up of walkers. We can coach you to marathon success, too! Our 20 week training program will get you fit, keep you healthy throughout the training progam and guarantee your success on race day!

I want to be a part of the Joints in Motion team.
Will my arthritis keep me from joining?

Many people with arthritis have successfully completed a marathon. We recommend you consult your physician before signing up for the team. Once you get the “thumbs up” from your doctor, you can call 1-877-9JOINTS to find the team closest to you. If you are unable to run, walk or hike, there are other ways you can join the team. You can become an honoree and have the team train on your behalf.

How much am I expected to raise?
That depends on the location of the marathon you select and the expense of travel from your area. Most fund-raising goals are between $1,500 and $5,000.

The Joints in Motion staff has guided thousands of first-time fund-raisers through this process and implemented online fund-raising tools to help you. Successful fund-raising strategies include a letter-writing campaign, matching gifts programs, social gatherings and events.

How hard is it to raise the money?
Many of our participants find that people are eager to donate money to fight arthritis. One in five adults live with arthritis so chances are that everyone knows someone effected by the disease. We will provide you with fund raising tips and ideas, as well as support along the way, but you must do the work. The most successful ways to raise the money are:

  • A personal letter-writing campaign to friends, family and co-workers. Often your story and that of the person you are honoring is compelling enough for people to support you.
  • Approaching companies that you know. Often companies can donate larger amounts than individuals.
  • Allowing friends and family to track your fund raising progress via the Internet and to contribute to your efforts via secure, online credit card donations.
  • It is essential that you start early to reach your target goal. Past runners/walkers/hikers have all reached their goals, and you can too! Have a positive attitude! While you may sometimes hear "no," every "yes" brings you closer to your goal and closer to finding a cure for arthritis.

What support will I receive?
Once you register, you will receive:

  • fund-raising support from both the Arthritis Foundation and team members
  • Joints in Motion letterhead and sample letters to help get your campaign started
  • free online fund-raising tools (save on postage by communicating via e-mail)
  • pledge forms to track your donations
  • thank you postcards
  • training team newsletters to keep you up to date

What is the training schedule like?
The Joints in Motion training schedule is 18 to 20 weeks long. Prior to the first session, you coach will evaluate your fitness level and develop a personal schedule to ensure your marathon goal. Most groups start out doing about three to four miles or about 30-45 minutes of training and gradually build from there.

How can I find a team in my area?
