American Juvenile Arthritis Organization (AJAO) National Conference

The AJAO National Conference is a way to make valuable educational presentations and activities available to families. Studies have demonstrated that family retreats improve children’s emotional functioning and decrease strain on the family.

Other benefits that can be gained by attending one of
these conferences include:

  • Increased communication among parents, teachers, and school administrators
  • Increased peer and social support
  • Increased access to a wide variety of health professionals and the latest medical information
  • Development of advocacy skills

These conferences can empower people who are challenged with a chronic disease to initiate healthy actions and behaviors as well as develop attitudes that can promote positive change. More importantly, many people form lifelong friendships which, in turn, decrease feelings of isolation and provide emotional support.

CHILDREN & TEEN PROGRAM
The Children and Teen Program will include activities designed to promote self-esteem and independence. A full schedule of activities is planned for children and teenagers with rheumatic diseases and their siblings. The program is organized by age groups, and each group will be supervised by a team of highly experienced Children’s Activities Leaders (CALs) including pediatric rheumatology health professionals, teachers, and parents of children with rheumatic diseases. Parents can concentrate on attending workshops and networking with other parents while their children are participating in a variety of activities. All activities are designed to help children and teens overcome obstacles, recognize and accept differences in themselves and others, and to build and maintain rewarding friendships that can last a lifetime. This program, along with several other planned recreational activities, will make this conference both a fun-filled and an educational experience for all the participants.

YOUNG ADULT PROGRAM
A young adult track will be offered to people ages 18 and older with rheumatic diseases. This track will focus on special concerns such as communication, social issues, health management, and self-advocacy as they relate to young individuals. Workshops will include time and energy management, self-esteem building, support networks, role-playing for self-advocacy, and other relevant topics. Spouses and significant others are invited to participate.

PARENT PROGRAM
The Parent Program is designed to help parents learn as much as possible about their child’s arthritis and/or related conditions and their care, as well as the effects on the whole family. The workshops will help answer many of the questions parents have about treatment, the role of the family, school issues, dealing with emotions, coping mechanisms, and support groups.
