Paget's Disease

What is it?

Paget’s disease is a disorder in which rapid and excessive bone breakdown and formation lead to large, misshapen bones. As a normal part of keeping bones strong and healthy, your body breaks down old bone and rebuilds new bone structure. In Paget’s diseases, one or a few bones begin a fast turnover cycle. As a result, affected bones are not built correctly and the bones become large but weak and they break easily.

The cause of Paget’s disease is not known, and there is no cure. However, medications are available that can slow the rapid turnover of bone and decrease the likelihood of fractures and complications.
