Osteonecrosis

Who is at risk?

Osteonecrosis affects both men and women, usually between the ages of 30 and 50 years. About 10,000 to 20,000 people develop osteonecrosis each year. Those at most risk for developing the disease are people who:

  • Have hip fractures
  • Drink alcohol to excess
  • Take large doses of steroids
  • Have sickle cell anemia
  • Have lupus
  • Have pancreatitis
