What Is It?

Soft tissue rheumatic syndromes affect tissues and the structure that surrounds a joint producing pain, swelling and inflammation. Following are locations and names of some soft tissue syndromes:

  • Shoulder
    • Rotator cuff tendinitis (Impingement syndrome)
    • Subacromial bursitis
    • Bicipital tendinitis
    • Myofascial pain
  • Elbow
    • Lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow)
    • Medial epicondylitis (golfer's elbow)
    • Olecranon bursitis
    • Ulnar nerve entrapment
  • Wrist and Hand
    • DeQuervain tendinitis
    • Stenosing tenosynovitis
    • Dupuytren's contracture
  • Front of Chest
    • Tietze's syndrome

What Are the Symptoms?

Syndromes are groups of signs and symptoms that occur together.

What Causes It?

It is caused by overuse or injury of joint or muscle, improper body posture, or abnormal bone or muscle structures, and may occur in association with other diseases or conditions.

Treatment Options

  • Braces or splints
  • Exercise
  • Heat/cold
  • Medications: glucocorticoids, NSAIDs
  • Occupational therapy
  • Physical therapy
  • Rest
  • Surgery (rare)
