Programs & Services Offered
For more information on any of the following programs, including locations and times, please call your local office.
Taking Control of Arthritis Course
If you have been diagnosed with any form of arthritis, this course can give you information to help you manage your illness. The course is a strong educational program presented in one session per week for three weeks. Topics include ways to conserve energy, medications, easing pain and depression, diet and exercise. Each session lasts two hours and is taught by a team of volunteers with personal experience with arthritis. Classes are open to people with arthritis, their spouses and family members. There is a charge which includes the cost of a workbook.
Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program
This land exercise series is designed to increase joint flexibility, range of motion, muscle strength and endurance. This is a non-clinical program and should not replace therapeutic exercise individually prescribed by a physician or therapist. Classes are one hour long and each session runs for 6-10 weeks. Some classes may be partially funded by your HMO.
Arthritis Foundation Aquatic Program
This is a warm water program designed to decrease pain and improve or maintain joint flexibility. This program is non-clinical and should be used in conjunction with an exercise program prescribed by a physician. Classes run for a 6 - 10 week period, 2 - 3 times per week, for 45 minutes to an hour. Some classes may be partially funded by your HMO.
Tai Chi From the Arthritis Foundation
Tai Chi from the Arthritis Foundation is designed to improve the quality of life for people with arthritis using Sun style Tai Chi, one of the four major recognized styles of Tai Chi. This style includes agile steps and exercises that may improve mobility, breathing and relaxation. The movements don't require deep bending or squatting, which makes it easier and more comfortable to learn. It is a slow, gentle form of movement. The program itself consists of 12 movements (6 basic and 6 advanced) a warm up and a cool down. Once becoming familiar with the 12 movements, the program is designed to provide continual challenge by reversing the direction of the movements.
Arthritis Foundation Support Groups
Support Groups are available for people with arthritis and their family members. These groups have been formed by people with arthritis to enable them to share practical information on coping with their illness. The groups usually meet once per month. There is no charge. Here is a chance to meet new friends and enjoy informative presentations.
