CAMP ESPERANZA/SOL WELCOMES CHILDREN WITH ARTHRITIS

Contrary to popular belief, kids get arthritis too. Arthritis affects approximately 300,000 children in the United States. Various forms of arthritis may impact children’s physical growth and activity, leading to feelings of isolation.

For children with arthritis, Camp Esperanza/Sol, located in the San Bernardino Mountains of Southern California, is one of the few places where they can meet other kids who understand what it is like to live with the pain of arthritis. There they are given a chance to expand their experiences and learn new skills in a safe, fun and educational environment.

From August 16-24, 140 children ages 8 to 17 years old enjoyed traditional camp activities such as rock climbing, canoeing, archery, swimming and arts and crafts in the beautiful outdoors.

As a highlight for teen campers with arthritis, the Arthritis Foundation hosted “Leadership Achievement Day”on Saturday, August 16. Renowned motivational speaker, author and “MTV MADE” host, Jeff Yalden, inspired teens to adopt positive attitudes and make choices that would help them lead more meaningful, fulfilling lives.

The Southern California Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation thanks Abbott Laboratories for their generous support of “Leadership Achievement Day” at Camp Esperanza/Sol.
