The Arthritis Foundation applauds 274 members of Congress for co-sponsoring the Arthritis Prevention, Control and Cure Act, S. 626/H.R. 1283. As of June 2, 2008, 53 senators and 221 representatives have shown leadership by co-sponsoring this landmark legislation, including Colorado Representative Diana DeGette, and Montana Senators Max Baucus and Jon Testor. The bill will help combat the most common cause of disabiity in the United States-arthritis-a disease which impacts 46 million adults and nearly 300,000 children. The arthritis bill, when enacted, will better focus federally funded arthritis research, expand and strengthen public health initiatives proven to combat the burden of arthritis, and improve access to pediatric rheumatologists to address the country's severe shortage of these critical health professionals.
The Foundation now urges the House Energy and Commerce Committee and the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee to respond to this congressional groundswell of support and proceed to committee consideration of this critical legislation. The Foundation asks Congress to act on the Arthritis Prevention, Control and Cure Act before the 110th Congress adjourns.
The Arthritis Foundation promotes government and private sector action to improve the lives of the 46 million Americans living with arthritis. But we need your help to get more government funding for arthritis research, to encourage early diagnosis and comprehensive treatment, and to improve access to quality health care for everyone with arthritis.
