Congresswoman DeLauro Hosts Town Hall Meeting

Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (left) of Connecticut hosted a health reform town hall meeting for over 200 seniors at Masonicare in Wallingford, CT on September 21.  Arthritis Foundation advocate, Jackie Barbato (right), described how the Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program at the Wallingford Senior Center helped her keep moving.  Rep DeLauro invited Jackie to speak to highlight the importance of prevention in health care reform.  Prevention is one of the five principles the Arthritis Foundation wants to see included in health care reform.

Town Hall Meeting on Health Care Reform

“Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, Ellen and Stuart Smith following the Senator’s Health Care Reform Town Hall Meeting held on August 20, 2009 at the West Warwick Senior Center”

The Smiths, two of RI’s Arthritis Ambassadors, attended three Town Hall Meetings focusing on health care reform held in August. The Smiths were prepared to speak with RI’s legislators about the Foundation’s key principles for health care reform: 1)Universal access; 2)affordable, sustainable & comprehensive; 3)preventive; 4)use of health information technology to improve efficiency, improve health outcomes and facilitate care coordination; and 5)comparative effectiveness research to improve outcomes and reduce cost.

FACES OF ARTHRITIS...MEET JULIA LEWIS

Although she’s just 6 years old, Julia Lewis of Westbrook, Maine has been raising funds for the Arthritis Foundation for half her life!  Diagnosed with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis at age 3, Julia has faced the pain, stiffness and limitations in movement that arthritis can cause. Advances in treatment options have made a world of difference for Julia. Her parents, Becky and Jay Lewis, know there is still much more work to be done. They decided to become involved with the local Arthritis Walk to raise funds for research and community programs. Julia has been a top fundraiser for the South Portland Arthritis Walk 3 years in a row. Julia’s fundraising campaign helped raise awareness about juvenile arthritis and the work of the Arthritis Foundation. Julia was recently featured in Parents Magazine.
