
Awards begin July 1, 2008
Research awards offered by the New York Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation provide an excellent opportunity for physicians, scientists, and arthritis health professionals to conduct research projects and receive training in arthritisfields. Applicants must be conducting research within the Chapter's twelve-county region. All applications are due February 8, 2008 and must be submitted electronically, unless otherwise indicated.

Young Scholar Award - $75,000 a year for three years
Supports biomedical research that will target the etiology of the rheumatic diseases, their diagnostic characteristics, and treatment protocols. It is intended to foster a career in arthritis related research. Awards are for individuals who have a faculty appointment as an Instructor in Medicine,Assistant Professor, or equivalent.

Clinical Research Award - $75,000 a year for three years
Supports clinical research related to the diagnosis, management, health care delivery, and epidemiology of people with arthritis. It is for established researchers at the assistant professor level or higher.
Research Award - $40,000 for one year
Supports novel pilot studies in the basic or clinical sciences. Proposals pertaining to pediatric rheumatology, sports medicine, osteoporosis, systemic lupus erythematosus, or immunology research are encouraged. It is not intended for investigators at the academic rank of professor, although they may serve as co-investigators.
Quality of Life Research Award - $40,000 for one year
Supports studies pertaining to quality of life. It is not intended for investigators at the academic rank of professor, although they may serve as co-investigators.
Doctoral Dissertation Award - $10,000 for one year
Provides support to advance the research training of arthritis health professionals. It is designed for pre-doctoral students entering the investigative or clinical research phase of their programs. Drug studies and laboratory in vitro studies are not appropriate.
Orthopaedic Fellowship Award - $50,000 for one year
Application due September 19, 2008.
Supports clinical or biomedical research in the surgical treatment of arthritis. It is intended for Residents in their third or fourth year of training. Paper submission only
Rheumatology Fellowship Award - $40,000 for one year
Application due February 1, 2008
Supports either biomedical or clinical rheumatology related research. It is intended for Fellows in their third or fourth year of training. Paper submission only.
Summer Student Fellowship - $2,000 award
Application due May 2, 2008
Supports full-time research, with a minimum commitment of eight weeks, in the broad areas of rheumatic diseases and musculoskeletal conditions. It is intended for graduate level students in the fields of medicine, biomedicine, physical therapy, occupational therapy, nursing, social work, psychology, and public health. Paper submission only.
