Charlestown Goes the Extra Mile for Arthritis Foundation
Partners with Erickson Retirement Communities to Raise Over $4300
CATONSVILLE, MD—Charlestown Retirement Community and its Baltimore-based manager and developer, Erickson Retirement Communities, participated in the 2008 Arthritis Walk for Baltimore County held on Saturday, May 3rd at Towson University.
Led by Lisa Roeder, the Social Work Manager of Renaissance Gardens at Charlestown, the team raised over $4300, with donations still being accepted. Members of the team included Charlestown employees Everett Wicks and Joyce Hinton.
The money was raised through contributions from employee “Denim Days” at Charlestown Renaissance Gardens and the Erickson corporate offices each Friday in April. A special chocolate basket was raffled, and sponsorships were accepted from numerous individuals and businesses for Team Charlestown.
The event is the Arthritis Foundation’s annual nationwide event that raises awareness and funds to fight arthritis, the nation’s leading cause of disability. Donations raised from the three mile walk remain in Maryland for research and awareness programs.
Roeder has taken an active leadership role in supporting the cause. She served on the State Advisory Council on Arthritis and is currently a Board Member of the State Chapter of the Maryland Arthritis Council. She also coordinates the activities for the Arthritis Support Group at Charlestown.
“Arthritis affects people of all ages,” Roeder stated. “27 million Americans live with osteoarthritis, and another 300,000 children have some form of juvenile arthritis. I have seen first hand the need for greater advocacy and medical resources.”
“I am so grateful for the support of my fellow employees at Charlestown and Erickson Retirement Communities,” continued Roeder. “Events such as the Arthritis Walk not only provide much needed funds for research, but also generate awareness and personal calls to action. It is a very meaningful day, and the Arthritis Foundation is fortunate to have such solid community partners. ”
