Be There With Bells On!

Georgia’s inaugural 2009 Jingle Bell Run/Walk for Arthritis will be held on Saturday, December 12 at the Lilburn City Hall Park. The race is a 5k run or walk through scenic trails in Gwinnett. There is also a 1 mile fun run and reindeer dash for kids! As the Arthritis Foundation’s most festive event, the Jingle Bell Run/Walk offers costume contests for teams, individuals and dogs. After the race, enjoy fun activities, food, goodies from our vendors and sponsors and an awards ceremony. Each participant receives an official Jingle Bell Run/Walk long-sleeved t-shirt, jingle bells and giveaways.

The Jingle Bell Run/Walk for Arthritis in Lilburn will benefit the more than 1.8 million adults and 9,200 children affected by arthritis in Georgia. Funds raised at the event will help us provide more programs and services to those living in our state with arthritis. Registration is $25 in advance and $30 on the day of the event. Participants are encouraged to fundraise. Sponsors to date include Abbott Laboratories, Genentech, UCB, Waffle House, Delta Air Lines, Inc., Coca-Cola Enterprises, Inc. and Big Peach Running Co.

Introducing...

Camp AcheAway!

More than 50 kids traveled to Camp JA July 19-22, held at Camp Will-A-Way at Fort Yargo State Park in Winder, Ga. While there, the campers voted on a new name for Camp JA and decided on Camp AcheAway, the perfect name for a camp that allows kids with arthritis to have a carefree week with other kids just like them in a medically safe environment. The week was action-packed and full of fun and new friends. The Arthritis Foundation, Georgia Chapter would like to thank Camp Twin Lakes organization for its partnership in making our dream a reality. We would also like to thank all of our awesome counselors, volunteers and staff for their dedication. The week was a huge success!

New camp photos from Camp 2009 are located on Flickr.com - look for "Arthritis Camp"!

LATEST NEWS:  Camp AcheAway 2010 will be held JULY 11-14th - MARK YOUR CALENDARS!

Georgia Chapter Partners with AgrAbility Project

AgrAbility in Georgia is a free service and is part of a national program administered through the United States Department of Agriculture.  The program focuses on promoting independence for members of the agricultural community who have disabilities.

AgrAbility can provide information and services that may make it possible for ill or injured farmers to return to farming.

The program in Georgia is managed by the University of Georgia's Cooperative Extension Service in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences and the Institute on Human Development and Disability in the College of Family and Consumer Sciences.

The Georgia Chapter is proud to partner with this project to serve agricultural workers around the state. For more information about this program, visit their website.  We are kicking off our collaboration with a series of workshops around the state:

Gardening and Farming with Arthritis - Including a Tai Chi Class

Whether you have a small home garden or a large farm, we will show you effective ways to reduce the stress on your joints. During this interactive workshop, you will learn how planting modifications, tool adaptations, and other effective strategies can make a difference in managing arthritis pain.  After the morning session, you will discover the many health benefits of AF Tai Chi Program.

The next workshops will be in Tifton, GA and Macon, GA.  We have a wide range of dates and times to choose from. Class size is limited, so register today! Registration fee is $15 per person.
