What is an advocate for arthritis?

It is someone like you, who uses their voice to improve the lives of people with arthritis. You can make a difference by becoming an advocate.

Arthritis Research needs funding, people with disabilities need laws to protect them and laws and funding are approved by the government. All it takes is ONE call, ONE letter or ONE email to your elected officials encouraging them to support these health related issues.

The more letters/e-mails or calls our elected officials receive, the more they realize that action is needed. Log on to www.arthritis.org/advocacy and enter your zip code. You can sign up to be an advocate online and receive automatic emails advising you of pressing advocacy issues.

What do arthritis advocates do?

Arthritis advocates want to use their voice for change about different issues related to arthritis. It is the power of these voices that are the core strength of the advocacy program.

Some advocacy activities include:

  • Advocating with state and local government for policy changes needed for people with arthritis, such as ensuring that arthritis medications are covered by medical assistance programs, and addressing the shortage of pediatric rheumatologists.
  • Advising others how to inform teachers, neighbors, school nurses, or friends about the impact of arthritis.
  • Assisting the Arthritis Foundation in outreach efforts to inform people about programs and services.
  • Performing speaking engagements to the public, medical community or media about arthritis.
  • Supporting Arthritis Foundation events throughout the year.
